2020 Pew Research Center’s American Trends Panel Wave 68: (2021)
Asian Americans live under the racial multiverse.
According to the FBI, Asian American hate crimes rose 73% in 2020. While about 60% of Asians say anti-Asian racism has increased during the pandemic, other races such as White, Black, and Latinos say anti-Asian racism has reduced or remained the same.
I define this as Asian American racial multiverse in the United States. Using a reliable and legitimate dataset, AMERICAN TRENDS PANEL _ WAVE 68 (Pew Research Center, 2020), and recently available data physicalization techniques, I create floral patterns that show how each race in the U.S. believes Anti-Asian racism has increased. I then embed these floral patterns as part of a portrait of an Asian American. Specifically, I create floral patterns using R curve in mathematics. It creates floral patterns with two circles. When the difference between the two circles is bigger, it creates more complicated floral patterns. Accordingly, if the flower has a complicated pattern, it implies that there are bigger differences between Asian American perceptions about Anti-Asian racism and those of other races. I decided to use this pattern because flowers have very beautiful and complex floral patterns under harsh conditions. Each color represents different races so does each flower represents different universes of Asian American Racism 2020. By doing so, I explore how art could function as a fact-checker.
